Notes and Editorial Reviews

Every so often Neville Marriner and his Academy stepped outside of their usual baroque/classical Fach, with impressive results. They made an outstanding Bartók disc for Argo, and this is another. The reason is simple: aside from the Barber, these are all basically emotionally reserved, gentle pieces that benefit from the sort of clean rhythms and ensemble precision that were Marriner’s specialty. They are marvelously played, especially the Ives, which seldom has sounded so purposeful, while the Cowell and Creston pieces remain novelties even today, both in concert and on disc. With sound that has held up very well, this is one of those discs that really does belong in every self-respecting CD collection of American classics.
