Notes and Editorial Reviews

Discs of Hugo Wolf's songs have never been candidates for the bestseller list. That is not surprising. They do not easily yield up their secrets: to enter Wolfs inner, often severe world requires a conscious effort on the part of the listener. On the other hand, once an inquiring collector has made the effort he becomes addicted and is assured of a lifetime's pleasure in exploring the composer's peculiarly concentrated, rewarding genre. For the composer's interpreters a similar effort and commitment has to be made. Thomas Allen has obviously decided this is a new field for him to conquer and, as is his wont, he has gone at it wholeheartedly. The result is a wonderfully satisfying disc. Given the baritone's deserved popularity, it may well Read more win new friends for the composer.

Allen has chosen judiciously from Wolf's settings of Mörike and Goethe. The Mörike songs are in some ways the most successful of all Wolf's settings simply because poet and composer seem so perfectly adjusted to each other. Allen has realized that and given just the right attention to the texts within the bounds of his own, wellknown gift for firm tone and secure line. He captures to perfection the profound, elevated mood of that superb love song, An die Geliebte, the interior, serene reflection of Gebet and Auf emn altes Bild, the daring, soaring musings of An eine Aeolsharfe. He is no less successful, predictably so, in the extrovert Fussreise, Jirigerlied and Der Gartner, and finds the sour humour of Bei einer Trauung also to his liking. Supporting Allen, Geoffrey Parsons is on his most nimble and thoughtful form.

Goethe and Wolf were perhaps not quite such happy bedfellows. Wolf, deliberately eschewing poems set by his great predecessors, often went for the more complex and philosophical settings represented here by the quizzical extracts from the West-tistlicher Divan. The pieces from the Tavern Book, hymning drink, are given with freewheeling enthusiasm. Better still is Allen's account of the indisputably great Harfenspieler settings from Wilhelm Meister, one occasion when Schubert is challenged. Allen enters wholly into the character of the strange figure of the blind Harper and carefully projects his guilty thoughts, so memorably etched by Wolf. The more popular and approachable Anakreons Grab, taken at a dangerously slow tempo, and Blumengruss are finely sung, the tone here appropriately lighter and more airy. Parsons finds no difficulty in the fiendish piano part of Der Rattenfringer, sung in rollicking fashion by Allen. The recording, produced by Andrew Keener at Abbey Road, perfectly balances voice and piano in a warm acoustic.
