"When premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1749, Rameau's "tragédie en musique enjoyed only a moderate success, with 25 performances. The composer and his librettist Cahusac made major revisions before relaunching it in 1756, and it is this second version that is presented here in a staging from Drottningholm filmed in 2006.
The work itself is a substantial and impressive artefact in which its creators consciously moved away from the standard subject matters of the genre for their tale of the combat of good and evil played out in ancient Bactria...
Roussel's musical direction is vital and clear, Audi's staging is intelligent and full of psychological insight, and Amir Hosseinpour's choreography seems apt and precise...Anna Maria Panzarella quite properly makes a meal of the proud and vengeful Erinice as a foil to Sine Bundgaard's sweetness-and-light Amélite.
...the various confidants and deities are all effective, and Rameau's admirers will relish what is a powerful musical and dramatic realization of one of his major scores."
-- George Hall, OPERA (August 2007)
