Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Little mouse, little mouse, takes me to his mousey house"--so begins, innocently enough, HK Gruber's supremely bizarre 'Frankenstein!!' "Now he nibbles out my eye," it continues in a typical move to the grotesque. Gruber's 1977 song cycle (or "Pan-demonium" as he calls it) sets nursery-rhyme-like texts--on monsters, rodents and superheroes--to sing-songy melodies and the accompaniment of a chamber orchestra and a full arsenal of raucous toy instruments. Surely the work is best heard, as here, with the composer himself half-speaking/half-singing, an approach derived from cabaret performance and from Schoenberg's 'Pierrot Lunaire.' Gruber uses a wide array of voices and registers, sometimes alternating multiple roles, and his thick German Read more accent applied to the off-kilter English lyrics adds another layer of humor and peculiarity.
Gruber, who grew up in post-WWII Germany, is a worthy successor to the subversive musical theater of Kurt Weill. This comes across in the sinister implications behind the playfulness of 'Frankenstein!!,' and also in the excerpts from Gruber's opera 'Gomorra' recorded here. Further rounding out this sampler of Gruber's music are a violin concerto and three brief chamber pieces, all of which blend modernist and popular music influences in good postmodern fashion.
