Notes and Editorial Reviews

LISZT Piano Concertos: No. l in E?; No. 2 in A. Totentanz Joseph Moog (pn); Ari Rasilainen, cond; German St P Rheinland-Pfalz CLAVES 50-2707 (56:38)

Meet Joseph Moog (b. 1987), former Wunderkind and current local Rhineland favorite. These are accomplished performances that could have come from any one of a vast legion of pianists two or three times his age. Solid (rather than brilliant) technique enables him to rattle off Read more Liszt’s demands with thumping ease, while a relaxed—never slack—pace makes place for some highlighting of lyrical oddments. By simply following Liszt’s directions, with no exceptional interpretive insight or ideas, Moog realizes the built-in effects and thus carries off these works with assurance. But if your interest is more Liszt than the latest pianistic hotshot, try Louis Lortie’s accounts, with George Pehlivanian and the Hague Residentie Orchestra, in a landmark collection of Liszt’s works for piano and orchestra ( Totentanz on Chandos 9864, Fanfare 25:1, the concertos, Chandos 9918, Fanfare 25:6).

Sound is immediate, detailed, and walloping, with Moog’s piano upfront. Not a bad beginning for a young artist.
