Notes and Editorial Reviews

MOZART Piano Concertos: No. 19 in F; No. 24 in c Clara Haskil (pn); Victor Desarzens, cond; Lausanne CO CLAVES 2617 (56:06)

That this music has appeared at all seems to be the result of the advocacy and persistence of Clara Haskil’s biographer Jerome Spycket, who has also written the notes to this Claves disc. He is of course a Haskil enthusiast: “There is not a music lover in the world,” he gushes, “who is not familiar with Clara Haskil and her dramatic destiny, thwarted by illness and two wars.” Haskil, Read more whom Spycket describes as “gray-haired, bent and hobbly,” to say nothing of excessively modest and self-critical, had about a 10-year career. Her illnesses, including a vast, overwhelming fatigue, were mysterious. Adored by audiences, she did not record often, yet five different performances of the pianist playing No. 19 have already been made available, as well as six of No. 24. Spycket was exposed to the performances heard here, from 1957 and 1956 respectively, in a most privileged context. Haskil’s sisters played him the tapes in the pianist’s apartment in Vevey, where he was struck by their unique “serenity.” Here’s where I part company with Spycket. Though I have not heard all the other recordings of these pieces by Haskil, these particular performances, recorded by Radio Suisse Romande, are as vigorous as any I have heard by this usually delicate pianist. The sound is a little clattery, but closely recorded: one hears Haskil’s piano as well as anywhere on record. I have never admired Haskil’s playing as much as does Spycket: perhaps no one has. Yet I found these concertos moving, even stunning at times. One cannot ignore her performances conducted by Fricsay, Karajan, or Markevitch, but the vigor of the playing here, the unexpected zest in the outer movements and the vaunted serenity of the Andante of the C-Minor make this a particularly attractive issue. Some will find it irreplaceable.
