Notes and Editorial Reviews

A welcome issue of a seminal work in Finnish music

Jukka Tiensuu (b1948) is that rare breed, a composer-harpsichordist (and pianist, conductor and teacher as well). The present release concentrates on the composer, with four works written between 1996 and 2000, which is all the background one can provide, for Tiensuu famously refuses to comment on his music. As his titles can be “deliberately ambiguous”, one is forced – refreshingly – to approach his works through the ears alone.

Tiensuu’s manner is experimental, embracing different styles and approaches, from electronics and computer-generated compositions toaleatory and serialism. Both Alma II: Lumo(1996; light, perhaps, or Low-energy Unoccupied
Read more Molecular Orbit?) and Alma III: Soma (1998; a ritual Indian drink, a Hindu god or a Brave New World reference?) are scored for orchestra and sampler. Along with Mood (1999), they strike me as fantasias-cum-tone poems, their forms determined by unstated expressive intents. They exhibit Tiensuu’s trademark rhythmic vitality and brilliant orchestration.

The major item is the Piano Concerto Mind (2000), which occupies more than half the disc’s playing time. The four movements concern themselves with the four elements, Earth, Air (a delightful scherzo), Water and Fire, though each has a subtitle, respectively Reflection, Play, Dream and Passion. There are many fine passages but I am not sure it all quite adds up to the sum of its parts. The opening Earth – Reflection meanders for far too long before really getting going. The concerto is performed with coruscating virtuosity by Juhani Lagerspetz and the Tampere Philharmonic play superbly throughout, guided through the music expertly by Susanna Mälkki.
