César Franck enjoys greater name recognition than do any of the other four composers listed below, his Violin Sonata, which enjoys a lovely outing, being particularly popular. His lengthy and some would say discursive String Quartet, however, does not receive nearly as much attention; and until I heard this new recording of it, I could understand why. It’s not an easy piece to get into, but the Ysaÿe Quartet bring to it a clarity of vision and an opulence of sound that revealed for the first time, to me at least, the incandescent beauty of the score. Pascal Rogé joins the Ysaÿe for an equally sumptuous reading of Franck’s gorgeous Piano Quintet which, on the surface, is a more immediately appealing work than theRead more quartet.
