César Franck enjoys greater name recognition than do any of the other four composers listed below, his Violin Sonata, which enjoys a lovely outing, being particularly popular. His lengthy and some would say discursive String Quartet, however, does not receive nearly as much attention; and until I heard this new recording of it, I could understand why. It’s not an easy piece to get into, but the Ysaÿe Quartet bring to it a clarity of vision and an opulence of sound that revealed for the first time, to me at least, the incandescent beauty of the score.
