Notes and Editorial Reviews

TCHAIKOVSKY The Seasons. Children’s Album Arkady Sevidov (pn) ARTE NOVA 340290 (72:25)

Although he has formidable competition from Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mikhail Pletnev, and Sviatoslav Richter, Arkady Sevidov holds his own in his delightful recording of Tchaikovsky’s most popular piano music, The Seasons. In this recording made in1995, Sevidov is a particularly gentle pianist, bringing out the grace and wistfulness of “March,” for instance, without undue Read more emphasis or affectation. He does the agitated “August” just as well, though that seems to me a lesser piece of music. “June,” marked andante cantabile, is a delightful walk in the park. At least here, Sevidov isn’t a splashy pianist; he is not given to huge effects, crashing chords, or melodramatic pauses. He plays with a natural-sounding rubato, without excessive pedaling, and he makes the most of the music. That is just as true in the various, mostly tiny, pieces of the Children’s Album as well. They are appropriately gentle, lyrical, or playful. They sound more charming than I ever remember hearing them.
