Notes and Editorial Reviews

A welcome and generous CD re-assembly. The colour of Bliss's music gains from the precision and wide dynamic range of this medium, and his vivid sense of theatre in the ballet music, expertly distilled by Handley, emerges with great pungency. There are two disappointments: neither of the ballet suites is recorded complete (no doubt for reasons of space on the original LP couplings), and anyone who knows either score will miss favourite movements; indeed, the case for recording both of these ballets in their entirety is a very strong one. And I find the recorded sound in the intermittently imspired but often luminously beautiful Meditations a bit on the flat side: not too much of a disadvantage in the more pastoral and lyric pages, but the Read more fuller and more aggressive moments are rather scrawny, with disappointingly recessed strings. There is no such problem in the ballet music, especially if you play it good and loud.
