Notes and Editorial Reviews

"That Norrington is much more a man of the theatre is immediately apparent from the anticipatory hush of the first bars of Rienzi, and generally from the greater contrasts of tempo and dynamics (and the extra brass bite and brilliance). From Norrington's group, there are also more revelations of texture (apart from the tuba) and timbre. . . . In matters of tempo, Norrington's disc, true to form, sets the cat among the pigeons. There's a Meistersinger Prelude almost two minutes shorter than the average (at 8'20'', it is the closest yet to a report that when Wagner himself conducted the Prelude in 1871, it lasted ''a few seconds more than eight minutes''). . . . Norrington's way here would seem to propose that the Masters are simply joining Read more in with the fun. Even more controversial will be the Tristan Prelude. . . . I found it both exciting and moving; no less so the pure voiced Jane Eaglen in an urgently dramatic Liebestod. The Parsifal Prelude is a human, immediate and musical experience (look elsewhere for mystical refulgence and long-drawn reverence). And the Siegfried Idyll is a real charmer; less of the traditional fireside warmth (the cradle song almost dances), but considerably more than usual woodland magic (period woodwind coming into their own). In short, vintage Norrington." -- John Steane, Gramophone Read less
