Notes and Editorial Reviews

This Jerome Kern treasury deserves to become a classic of the music-theatre discography.

John McGlinn and EMI have been doing Kern proud in recent years. First came their Gramophone Award-winning recording of Show Boat (11/88), then a collection of his overtures (9/89—nla) followed by a Broadway showstoppers album that included seven of his songs (8/93), and now this treasury. I should add, too, the lovely ''Kiri sings Kern'' collection conducted by Jonathan Tunick (7/93).

A quick glance at these titles points up the familiarity of the post-Show Boat songs of the 1930s in comparison with those recorded here from 1912 to 1924, of which ''Till the clouds roll by'' alone has found popularity. (It became the
Read more title of MGM's biopic of Kern released in 1947.)

With the exception of ''The Ragtime Restaurant'', a timely reminder that Berlin didn't have the monopoly on that craze, these early songs inhabit a world of expression that Kern made peculiarly his own both in the sentiments they express and in his musical settings. Many commentators have rightly noted the classical purity of his songs, their harmonic shifts and strong rhythmic patterns, and as records like this reveal, there are evocations of the music-hall and the minstrel shows that set him apart by a few years from his esteemed colleagues. On a grander scale, here is the ''Wishing-well scene'' from Dear Sir that foreshadows the composition of Show Boat three years later. In the later songs, it is instructive to be reminded that a song like ''The folks who live on the hill'' was composed with a lolloping rhythmic background not at all like the version by Peggy Lee that became so popular.

Thomas Hampson brings his powerful baritone to this ballad and gives a sensitive account of Last time I saw Paris, but he in no way overshadows the other artists on this disc, including a newcomer to the McGlinn roster, Hugh Panaro; of the regulars, George Dvorsky, Rebecca Luker and Jeanne Lehman have, I feel, never given better of themselves than here. Like their conductor, they have an instinct and a rapport for Kern's infectious musical world that is matched by the warmth of this recording that enables all the many varied touches in the orchestrations to gleam brightly. This Jerome Kern treasury deserves to become a classic of the music-theatre discography.'
