Notes and Editorial Reviews

'Mudzimu Mudzimu' translates from Shona as 'The Greater Spirits' and while Zimbabwe is famous for bira, an all-night ceremony of drinking, dancing and music, Batanai Marimba are not singing about Scotch malt whiskey and Venezuelan rum. Instead, this nine-piece UK-based Southern African roots band are calling down the ancestors, making the connection with the motherland, riding a vibe that is proud, joyous and life affirming. And Wildly funky. The album features one of Zimbabwe's most inspired marimbamen, bandleader and singer Wedzerai Zvirevo, alongside some tremendous guest contributions from Ifang Bondi's Fula fiddle maestro Juldeh Camara, celebrated English accordionist Bert Santilly and upcoming singer and kalimba star Mimi Kamera. A Read more rare production role for Bhundu Boys' Kuda Matimba makes Batanai Marimba's fourth release a must for any music enthusiast wanting to jump aboard a dynamic and enchanting cultural train. Mudzimu Mudzimu confirms the promise of their previouis albums and some. Never have Batanai Marimba sounded so warm, so clear, so sweet to the ears. The marimba may be a tonal percussion instrument but listen to how they make it sing...there is a beauty and eloquence here common to the peoples of Southern Africa. Revolutions turn sour; democracy gets sold short; HIV, violence and religious fundamentalism continue to cut swathes through the region's populace. Yet Batania Marimba prove over and over, in very note they play, that love and joy and celebration finally win through, that our common humanity allows us to share music and communicate beyond the barriers of language. Greater Spirits? In this CD they live and dance. Enjoy! ~ Garth Cartwright Read less
