Notes and Editorial Reviews

A native of Luxembourg, Lou Koster was largely self-taught as a composer, flourishing in the interwar period as a pianist whose activities included accompanying silent films. Orchestrated from piano originals, pieces such as Lore-Lore and Moselträume were radio hits in the 1930s, and Koster became renowned for subtle, sensuous light music filled with unexpected turns and emotional nuances.  Very Enjoyable Light Classical Works March 28, 2015 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This new Naxos recording will undoubtedly serve as an introduction to a completely unknown composer, and an entertaining introduction it turns out to be. Hailing from the small European country of Luxembourg, Lou Koster wrote compositions for piano and even silent films in the early 20th century. Many of her (yes- her!)works were transcribed for orchestra, and that is what you get here- an overture, a light orchestral suite entitled 'Suite dramatique', and 5 waltz suites. These are all light, happy compositions and might even evoke memories of the Golden Years of Viennese light music under the Strauss family. The Orchestre Estro Armonico Luxembourg is a fine chamber orchestra, very appropriate for Koster's style, although I thought it sounded a bit thin at times in the string section. I think you will really enjoy this recording, which offers a refreshing change of pace from the heavier classical repertoire." Report Abuse
