Notes and Editorial Reviews

Philipp Harnoncourt’s staging of Rodelinda translates the Baroque opera into a modern context, which tells the timeless story in an impressing and direct way. Even during the composer’s lifetime, Rodelinda was one of his most successful works. Composed in 1725, the opera is faithful to the formal conventions of its day on the one hand, while on the other it provides an exceptionally emotional and psychological characterization of the individual figures on the stage. An altogether brilliant ensemble of soloists appears in this Handel production at the Theater an der Wien. The present release is a live recording of the premiere at the Theater an der Wien, made on March 20, 2011.
