Notes and Editorial Reviews

Pierre Rode’s concertos represent the full flowering of the French violin school, the origins of which can be traced back to his teacher Viotti’s arrival in Paris in 1782. Bold and youthful, the First Violin Concerto contrasts with the more pastoral and introspective moods of the Fifth Violin Concerto, while the Ninth was written during the composer’s stay in Russia. All three works share Rode’s signature finales which ‘sparkle with gracefulness, piquancy and impishness’. Performed using painstakingly prepared new editions, this is the third of five volumes containing all thirteen of Rode’s Violin Concertos.  A jewel.  February 16, 2015 By Anthony G. (SANTA FE, NM) See All My Reviews "This recording is the jewel of my nineteenth century violin concerto collection. I strongly urge that one purchase it. It will hold you spellbound as it did me. I have listened to it at least a half-dozen time already and plan to listen even more times. That says a lot coming from a connosieur such as myself."  Classical In Every Sense February 15, 2015 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "18th century French composer Pierre Rode wrote a number of graceful, charming violin concertos, and with this new disk, Naxos has reached the mid-point of its project to record all of them. Violinist Friedemann Eichhorn joins conductor Nicolas Pasquet and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra in an excellent traversal of concertos # 1, 5, and 9, thus allowing a look at Rode's compositional styles during early, mid, and latter phases of his career. These works come straight from the Classical Era in terms of structure, thematic textures, and overall gravitas, which is to say they are all full of gentle lyricism a la Haydn and Mozart. Both soloist and orchestra sound just fine, with Naxos' high quality audio engineering adding to the merit of this recording. All things considered, I would expect that fans of the Classical Era will really like this disk, which I certainly did. Recommended." Report Abuse
