Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Karajan recorded three Brahms symphony cycles for DG. The performances listed above come from his second series, which was recorded during 1977 in good, perhaps slightly grainy sound. His later Brahms interpretations usually showed great understanding and insight, but often lacked fire and commitment at the delivery point. Here the Third Symphony is given a satisfyingly virile and forthright reading. There is no exposition repeat, but the first movement is in every other respect conveyed in masterly fashion. If the basic tempo of the third movement is a little on the fast side, it becomes more expansive as the music develops, and the more vigorous sections of the finale are excitingly played. Throughout the work, in fact, the music's Read more pulse beats pretty strongly."

-- A.S. Gramophone [8/1993]

An enjoyable romp with a showman who knows exactly what he is up to. On such familiar ground Karajan takes exhilarating risks and imparts a dramatic flourish even when Brahms is at his most indigestible. The sound from the Berliners is luminous and refreshing, lapsing into pure schmaltz for those melting moments when the lower strings hold sway.

Excellent Symphony Cycle April 29, 2013 By M. Bishop (Clackamas, OR) See All My Reviews "This album was a good purchase for me, rounding out my collection of Brahm's symphonies by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. I already had symphonies 1 and 2 by Brahms, and the interpretations for the entire symphony cycle by Karajan received critical acclaim. There is great precision demonstrated by the orchestra in these symphonies, coupled with moments of controlled, palpable emotional expression. I highly recommend this album--and the entire cycle of Brahms' symphonies by Karajan--to anyone desiring to experience Brahms' orchestral expression at its best." Report Abuse
