Notes and Editorial Reviews

A composer’s written and verbal comments on his own work are invaluable for both the performer and the musicologist. The composer’s own interpretations as a performer of his own works can be taken as more important than written and oral “confessions” are. Koda?ly did not train as a performer, and it was at the relatively ripe age of 35, coincident with his Psalmus Hungaricus becoming a world success, that he was persuaded to take up the conductor’s baton - and with a single exception, he felt called upon to conduct only his own works.

This wonderful set includes Kodály’s own recorded performances of some of his best music, including the stupendous Psalmus Hungaricus which
Read more both the composer and many of his admirers considered his masterpiece. Kodály was a pretty good conductor despite his coming to it reluctantly and without much training, and better yet, he knew exactly what he wanted his music to sound like, so the overall effect is pretty powerful. The production is good, and texts are included.
