Notes and Editorial Reviews

With a flawless technique, a delicate touch and playing of poetic expressivity, the French pianist Hélène Grimaud has quickly become one of the most important musicians of her generation. Virtuosic gifts aside, her deep commitment to human rights and the protection of endangered species, among other causes – along with her radiant personality and charm, have won her fans beyond the world of classical music lovers. This boxed set, which gathers the complete recordings she made for Erato and Teldec between 1996 and 2001, offers a portrait of one of the great artists of our time (Beethoven, Brahms, Gershwin, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, R. Strauss). With a flawless technique, a delicate touch and playing of poetic expressivity, the French pianist Hélène Grimaud has quickly become one of the most important musicians of her generation.  Gifted Pianist Revivifies Old Standards May 2, 2016 By R. McNeill (Winston-Salem, NC) See All My Reviews "Helene Grimaud, the young French pianist, has developed from a prodigy into a excellent interpreter of the heavyweight repertoire. Her earlier performances of Rachmaninoff solo pieces first caught my attention with their acute insight. In this collection, she breathes new life into the Brahms and Schumann concerti (though the orchestras behind her may be a little boisterous sometimes) and even, almost miraculously, into the Rachmaninoff 2nd. The album also includes Strauss, Gershwin and the Ravel cto, which is a little brittle to my taste, but that may be partly Ravel's fault. In short, this reasonably priced collection should not be overlooked because most of the selections are standard repertoire. She brings something new and interesting, but valid, to each of the major works. Buy it, and encourage this young interpreter." Report Abuse
