Those who have been following Louis Lortie’s Beethoven series for Chandos will not be disappointed by this latest instalment. Op. 7 is among the most consistently beautiful of Beethoven’s earlier sonatas, and Lortie’s playing has all the warmth and musicality one could wish for. The two Op. 14 sonatas are on a smaller scale; while Op. 6 – Beethoven’s only sonata for piano duet – is not part of the cycle at all: an engaging trifle, but no more. Fine recording.
