Notes and Editorial Reviews

Premiered in 1905, Sibelius' music for Maeterlinck's symbolist play, Pelleas et Melisande, scored for a small orchestra, is one of the composer's masterpieces. Since there are no trumpets or brighter percussion, and English horn, clarinet, horns, and timpani are prominent, the colors are rich, dark, and menacing. The mood throughout is one of impending doom. Even the happy dance-like entr'acte is unsettling in its constant shifting of mood. Tuomas Ollila's reading, a bit faster than the norm, is taut and dramatic and contains many beautiful, soul-searching moments, such as the melancholy second-movement English horn solo that depicts Melisande, and the anguished, heart-felt intensity in The Death of Melisande. This is one of the best Read more performances of this music that I have ever heard. The rest of the pieces on this CD are lightweight by comparison, but nonetheless are well crafted and enjoyable. The Cassazione is quite a nice little discovery. Arresting from its opening notes, it is like a small, kaleidoscopic divertimento in one movement. The performances are exemplary throughout: the smallish orchestra responds to Ollila's direction with a proper balance of tension and flair, and the conductor's approach always seems true to the meaning of the music. The recorded sound is rich and full, maybe just a touch too reverberant in the very loudest passages.

A LOVELY SAMPLER OF SIBELIUS... November 5, 2014 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "Today I heard a doubleheader of Sibelius---his lovely incidental music for Pelleas and Melisande and a few other choice morsels, and later on the Scenes Historiques, Suite 1 (I wonder why Jukka-Pekka Saraste's recording of these suites is not available). I remember when I acquired a set of ten pieces for piano called From The Land Of A Thousand Lakes, and I found that some of those pieces are part of tne Melisande score. Beautiful. Yes, I am one happy Sibelian camper. I am still waiting for Bernstein's set of the first three symphonies..." Report Abuse
