Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series continues its successful rooting-out of romantic truffles: these concertos were both written at the turn of the century. While Donald Francis Tovey is better known as a musicologist and author, he was also a virtuoso pianist. The work shows the obvious influence of Brahms, though the pianism has more the refinement of Grieg. Everything is carefully and tastefully worked out. In the last movement "Alla marcia," Tovey dispenses with the academic strictures that hold the previous movements in check, and the anthemic theme is sung out with gusto by all players.
Alexander Campbell Mackenzie saw his "Scottish" concerto premiered by Paderewski in 1897 and there were subsequent endorsements by no less
Read more a pianist than Busoni. Nevertheless, this dynamic work has languished since. Mackenzie's own comment on its fate speaks to the plight of British music even today: "...I don't know why they don't do it more frequently--except that, generally, British pieces are never in favour."
Steven Osborne, the 1997 Naumberg International Competition winner, provides committed readings. He also receives well-rehearsed support from Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Read less
