Notes and Editorial Reviews

Franz Schubert may have only lived 32 years, but there is no question that he packed a phenomenal amount into his lifetime, with around 600 of his total of nearly 1000 works composed before he was 21. It is astounding to think, given his reputation today as one of Western art’s greatest figures, that only a very small proportion of his music was either performed or published in his day. Born in 1797, he was very much aware of the ‘shadow’ of Beethoven, another of the ‘First Viennese School’ (with which Schubert is often equated) and a composer who immeasurably expanded the expressive range of three major genres: the symphony, piano sonata and string quartet. And yet his doubts regarding how he was to follow this German composer’s example Read more proved unjustified; combining his phenomenal melodic gift with a powerful dramatic sense and command of large-scale structure, Schubert equally enhanced these three areas, bestowing on each a large body of compositions that are among today’s most performed pieces of classical music.

The symphony, piano sonata and string quartet, therefore, are all included in this special collection, which details the majority of the composer’s output through separating it into key sections. Joining the string quartets – of which the late D804, D810 are D887 are undoubtedly the most inspired – are a range of other chamber music treasures, including the famous String Quintet and ‘Trout’ Piano Quintet, the endearing large-scale Octet for wind and strings, and various duo works such as the Arpeggione Sonata. Though the sonatas dominate his piano literature, Schubert also excelled at composing shorter works for this instrument, such as the Impromptus, and a wonderful array of music for four hands is also included. Contributions to the realm of sacred choral music include six masses, the unfinished Lazarus (which Alfred Einstein believed far surpassed Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Lohengrin as a step along the road to music drama) and the imposing Deutsche Messe, while the inclusion of the opera Alfonso und Estrella and the incidental music to Rosamunde on the set represents the handful of works Schubert wrote for the stage. Last, but by no means least, are Schubert’s secular vocal works. Containing some of his most poignant and penetrative writing, and drawing on a vast range of authors – including Goethe, Schiller, Shakespeare and many of his close friends – these include part-songs, then a popular genre among amateur choruses, and a huge corpus of lieder, among which are such gems as Gretchen am Spinnrade and Der Tod und das Mädchen as well as the great song cycles Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang.

That Schubert excelled in almost every genre akin to the period in which he lived is in no doubt. Spanning the length of his career, and featuring a wealth of acclaimed artists and ensembles – among them some of the composer’s greatest interpreters, such as Alfred Brendel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau – this comprehensive box set is an exciting addition to Brilliant Classics’ ever-expanding library of editions.

Other information:
- The most comprehensive Schubert Edition ever!
- A celebration of the Viennese genius, from the grand structures of the jubilant 9th symphony (“of heavenly length”) to the morbid skeleton melodies of Winterreise, from the genial bonhomie of the Trout Quintet to the utter despair of Der Doppelgänger, from the virtuoso brilliance of the Wanderer Fantasy to the rustic simplicity of the Ländler.
- Schubert’s music touches the heart directly, his deceptively simple melodies bring tears to the eyes, his wandering between the dark and the light symbolizes the universal condition humaine.
- Featuring numerous period-instrument and award-winning recordings. Booklet contains consummate notes on the composer and his oeuvre.
- Extensive liner notes and sung texts will be available for download soon after release.

The Symphonies:

There are so many Schubert cycles available now, many of them very fine, but this may well be the best of all. Without taking anything away from Blomstedt, whose Schubert credentials are second to none (his San Francisco remakes for Decca were also excellent), the principal asset here is the Staatskapelle Dresden, whose lean but glowing sonority, textural transparency, and world class solo winds prove ideal for Schubert, both early and late.

So often in this music, for example, the trumpets and drums either blast crudely (period instrument performances), or aren’t audible at all (modern instruments). Here, they cut through the ensemble without sounding out of balance and energize the melodic line. And then there’s Blomstedt, the kind of conductor who truly loses himself in the music in a good way; you aren’t conscious of a guiding hand at all in the sense that each movement moves naturally, inexorably, at an ideal tempo, as if self-propelled. Consider, for example, the delicious bounce to the opening allegro of the Third Symphony.

The above comments, however, should not be taken as an indication that this is a “middle of the road” cycle in terms of emotional intensity. Blomstedt grinds out the menacing climax of the first movement development in the “Unfinished” as well as anyone, and in “The Great” C major Symphony he shapes an eloquent interpretation without a single dead spot, culminating in an overwhelmingly energetic finale. The sonics, like the interpretations, never interpose themselves between the listener and a visceral experience of the music. A great set, for sure.

The Piano Trios:

The founder of the Klaviertrio Amsterdam is Hungarian-born pianist Klára Würtz, and those who have enjoyed her other performances of Viennese music will probably like these, as well, for one gets a strong sense that it is she who is driving the interpretations. Sample the first movement of the Piano Trio in E flat major, D. 929, to get an idea of how it works. The quintessentially Schubertian moment in this movement, uniting intense lyricism with a great step forward in chromatic harmony, is the appearance of the B minor second theme, so distant harmonically from the heavily triadic opening E flat theme. Würtz favors the intellectual over the emotional here. Note how she punches out the B flat dominants in the cadential material preceding the B minor theme, sharpening the contrast of color and then keeps to the trio's already brisk tempo, a click or two past the marked Allegro, as the actual theme begins. It's this way all the way through; you may wish for a bit more of the Schubertian melancholy, but the trio has a firm grip on these sprawling scores. The slow movements are lovely, with gorgeous cantabile melodies, and the Notturno in E flat major, D. 897, apparently a rejected slow movement for the Piano Trio in B flat major, D. 898, makes a deeply tranquil entr'acte here.

Alfonso und Estrella:

This 1978 recording of Schubert’s finest opera, sans libretto, is a revelation and godsend to those who love this composer’s music but don’t have or have never heard this work. (I fell into both categories.)... Perhaps one reason I responded so well to this excellent score was the startlingly dramatic conducting of Otmar Suitner... Edith Mathis is her usual excellent self (I always though much more highly of her than her soubrette counterpart of the time, Helen Donath), Peter Schreier has seldom sounded better...
