Notes and Editorial Reviews

There are so many wonderful moments in this recording of Vladimir Ashkenazy playing the Chopin sonatas and etudes that it would not be possible to list them all. Consider, for example, the finale of the Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, where Ashkenazy most convincingly shapes what so many others render amorphous or grotesque. His performance of the Étude in F Major, Op. 10, No. 8, is a delight, with the right hand rollicking as the left hand sings the confidently jolly melody. In the Etude in A-flat major, Ashkenazy brings out the tenor and alto countermelodies with a gentleness that should stand as a reproach to the many who hammer out these internal lines.
Throughout his performance of the technically daunting Etudes, Ashkenazy's
Read more prodigious technique allows him to focus exclusively on making beautiful music. Hence, while the electric precision of his arpeggios in the first étude of Op. 10 and the preternatural evenness of his oscillating thirds in the sixth étude of Op. 25 take one's breath away, the lasting impression of his performance is that of inspired music-making at its highest level.
