Notes and Editorial Reviews

1987 being the 50th anniversary of George Gershwin's death, record companies have brought out more than the usual number of discs featuring his music. The best of them is a Nonesuch compilation of two excellent '70s LPs, featuring pianist William Bolcom (1973) and his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris (1978). The 1973 disc contained nearly all of Gershwin's solo piano music while the later one gave us very sympathetic performances of 14 Gershwin songs, 10 of which have made it to the CD; the omitted ones, for who knows what reason other than arbitrary choice, are “Love Walked In“ (which, at 2:00, would have fit on the CD), “My Cousin From Milwaukee“ (the one that I could most easily do without), “The Lorelei,“ and “Fascinatin' Rhythm.“ The Read more performances by Morris and Bolcom are both sympathetic and witty (when it's called for), free of maudlin sentiment and grotesque stylization (in my experience, beware of any singer who's billed as a “stylist,“ a synonym for “weak voice, bad taste“), suggesting a labor of love, and there is cueing for every single selection. I wish Gershwin could have heard these performances.
