Notes and Editorial Reviews

Although this set opens with what is known to many as "the Gargamel music" from the Smurfs cartoons, what follows is quite a serious musical undertaking. Volumes 53a and 53b (Hyperion 67403/4) of Leslie Howard's Herculean undertaking were released at about the same as the pianist finished the last of the series' recordings in 1998, more than thirteen years after the first sessions. Together the two sets of Volume 53 contain all of the music for piano and orchestra, seventeen works in total.
Listeners familiar with either Liszt's music or Howard's phenomenal talent should not hesitate: the recordings and performances are far more than adequate. Even if you already have discs of your favorite pianist or conductor in the better-known
Read more concertos, these are essential sets. Howard's pianism and his intimate knowledge of the music are at the fore here. Whether in bombastic full-fingered passages, treacherous passagework, or sparkling pianissimos, Howard is dead-on. In four of the eight works presented in this set, Howard wears a slightly different hat as well: that of the Liszt scholar who studied and compared published editions, manuscript parts and scores, and bits of musicological evidence long-lost to prepare new, authoritative performing editions of the works.
