Notes and Editorial Reviews
Together with Volume 53a (Hyperion 67401) of Hyperion and Leslie Howard's edition of the Franz Liszt's complete piano music, this set presents all of Liszt's music for piano and orchestra. As is to be expected from this monumental series, the performances are excellent, the liner notes are meticulously researched, and where possible Howard has consulted the manuscripts and early printed editions to ensure an authoritative text.
Two of the pieces in this set are Liszt's versions of other composers' works: Schubert's solo-piano 'Wandererfantasie' arranged for piano and orchestra, and Weber's 'Konzertstück' with adjustments to the solo part to better balance later pianos against the orchestra. Two others exist in other versions which can

stand as completely separate works: the 'Totentanz' is given here in its first version (the final version is in Volume 53a), and the 'Concerto pathétique' is the final incarnation of what began as the solo-piano 'Grand solo de concert,' of which Liszt made a concertante version (also in Volume 53a) and reworked twice more before the piano-orchestra 'Concerto pathétique.'
Howard's performances are sparkling throughout. His mastery of Liszt's idiom is complete, the result of years of performance and intensive study. Read less
