Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Patient and painstaking restoration allows us to savor in real terms the one Mahler interpretation bequeathed us by Carlos Kleiber."

"...While Kleiber may have remained relatively detached from the Mahler output, he certainly takes command in the opening Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde with tenor Waldemar Kmentt...In fact the more hysterical passages – in dramatic contrast to the objective, dispassionate lyrics – seem to attract the conductor to a visceral surge of orchestral fury...Ludwig shines in the double variations that constitute Der Einsame im Herbst and again in the extended Abscheid, which basically moves in the form of a sonata-allegro..." - Gary Lemco, Audiophile Audition

Possibly the best Das Lied von der Erde December 30, 2014 By B. Murty (Aptos, CA) See All My Reviews "Christa Ludwig and Waldemar Kmentt are ALWAYS heard - meaning the orchestra does not overwhelm the soloists like it does in many other recordings. If you are a Kleiber fan, you will like his usual use of rubato. If now, well, point me to a better DLvdE please. Bottom-line: The best of the best" Report Abuse
