Notes and Editorial Reviews

Universal’s “20th-Century Classics” reissue series totals a couple dozen absorbing titles; one of the most welcome is this utterly idiomatic disc devoted to the great Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1930–96). In November Steps, a breakthrough piece, he fused Messiaen–influenced modernist technique with native folk instruments: shakuhachi flute and biwa lute. The dark Eclipse, for shakuhachi and biwa alone, evokes Takemitsu’s film-scoring for such directors as Kurosawa. Corona, an experimental sequence of tone-color studies for various overdubbed keyboards, has a sci-fi soundtrack feel. In contrast, A String Around Autumn is a lush viola concerto, a highlight of Takemitsu’s ravishing late period.
