Notes and Editorial Reviews
While racy cover art is often just there to catch the buyer's eye, in this case it is truth in advertising. Arte Nova's 2007 release of Arkady Sevidov's 1996 Scriabin recordings captures the lascivious nature of the music perfectly. Though these four early works come years before Scriabin toyed with the idea of publishing his Third Symphony under the title "The Poem of Orgasm" -- at the advice of his publisher, he settled on "The Poem of Ecstasy" -- they are still extremely sensual works. Scriabin achieves this intoxicating blend through his distinctive use of highly chromatic harmonies, deeply expressive melodies, relentlessly insistent rhythms, and intensely climax-driven structures.
In this unique
coupling of four works, the Russian virtuoso Sevidov turns in performances that don't disappoint. With Konstantin Krimets and the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Sevidov creates an immensely ardent performance of the three-movement F sharp minor Concerto. His F minor Sonata and Prelude and Nocturne (for the left hand only), are both deeply persuasive, and Olga Sevidova creates a truly smoldering reading of the Fantasy. Recorded by Lyubov Doronina in Studios 1 and 5 of the Russian Broadcast and Recording Department in Moscow, this disc needs to be turned way up before it makes an impression, but once it does, that impression is indelible.
