Notes and Editorial Reviews

Music lovers and aspiring pianists wishing to know Kirchner's challenging, rewarding piano output will be glad to have this release as a point of reference.

Leon Kirchner's craggy, turbulent, skillfully wrought, unrelentingly virtuosic, and rhythmically alive piano music has retained remarkable stylistic consistency for nearly 60 years. Many commentaries accurately pinpoint the influence of both Schoenberg and Sessions, with whom Kirchner studied, although the music shares common harmonic leanings with Scriabin. A fresh transfer of Leon Fleisher's old Epic recording of the First Sonata leads off the disc, followed by Interlude I, performed by Peter Serkin (last available as part of a deleted RCA recital of world premieres written for the pianist). The Five Pieces for Piano originally concluded Max Levinson's 1987 solo debut release on Encoded Music, while unreleased live traversals of Interlude II, The Forbidden, and the Second Sonata respectively feature Jonathan Biss, Joel Fan, and Jeremy Denk. Music lovers and aspiring pianists wishing to know Kirchner's challenging, rewarding piano output will be glad to have this release as a point of reference.
