Of all the catchy music by Arthur Sullivan (which ranks as some of the catchiest music ever composed), none perhaps is as devilishly catchy as Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers . Composed in 1888, it is their sunniest score—belying the fact that the partnership was on its last legs. So much was W. S. Gilbert trying to placate and pacify the frustrated Arthur Sullivan (who so desperately wanted to write a grand opera) that the first 20 minutes of the score is entirely sung through. It is a glorious score, one of their best, and if you can get “We’re Called Gondolieri,” “A right round regular Royal Queen,” and the dozen other immortal standards out of your head after hearing this joyous new recording from the Ohio Light Opera, you are of sterner stuff than I.

Albany’s complete recording, made in 2006 during live performances, is a smash success. The conducting by J. Lynn Thompson, never flashy, is very satisfying; the singing and acting are equally accomplished, with a cast obviously having a wonderful time. High praise goes to the lead clown, Ted Christopher, as the noble Duke who hilariously “leads his regiment from behind,” and Gary Moss, whose Don Alhambra is fully worthy of comparison to the driest, drollest Don Alhambra of them all, Kenneth Sandford. For those who really love this score, the 1927 recording, available in at least two CD transfers, remains the ultimate, with imperishable performances by Henry Lytton, Derek Oldham, and Bertha Lewis. But this sparkling new recording of The Gondoliers compares quite favorably to the classic modern stereo ones from D’Oyly Carte made in 1961 and 1977, and the digital sound is certainly more up to date. Highly recommended.
