Notes and Editorial Reviews

[This] is a compilation from four previous releases—Henry Krips's 1961 collection with the Philharmonia Promenade Orchestra, Barbirolli's 1967 collection with the Hallé, Boskovsky's 1972 Die Fledermaus, and Schwarzkopf's classic 1959 operetta recital from which we have just the "Nun's Chorus". The majority of the pieces come from Barbirolli, and I don't find much to enthuse about in his decidedly mechanical, un-Viennese performances. On the other hand, Schwarzkopf is for me irresistible, and one can scarcely complain when the Fledermaus excerpts bring us singers of the quality of Brigitte Fassbaender, Nicolai Gedda, Renate Holm and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. What will probably matter most to prospective buyers is that EMI Read more have inexpensively gathered together most of the obvious Johann Strauss favourites—both vocal and orchestral—in performances that, if not always outstanding, are never less than acceptable.
