Jascha Heifetz, who loved to spice up his recital programs with encore pieces by a wide variety of composers, arranged more than 150 of them for violin and piano, and in this masterly tribute, Itzhak Perlman plays with elegance and panache an engaging selection of 19 of these miniatures ranging from Rameau's ''Rigaudon'' to Manuel Ponce's ''Estrellita'' and Gershwin's ''Three Preludes.'' There's sweetness aplenty here, but honeyed, not saccharine, for the music bespeaks the bracing modernity of Heifetz's own taste..."
