Inside the historic walls of the palace the double grand piano virtually came to life, and the recording of the concert includes the inspiring environment of the unique acoustics of the great hall. The Pleyel Double Grand Piano is a real curiosity among instruments, only a few examples existing in the whole world. Originally around 50 instruments were produced at the Paris Pleyel piano factory, most of which were destroyed during the first world war. The instrument was developed by the firm during the 19th century, the last one leaving the factory around 1930. The instrument weighs nearly 600 kilos, is 2.5 metres long, and the two keyboards are situated at each end. Its clever construction lies in the fact that although both pianos are together in a single case, each has its own set of strings, its own pedals and its own action. At the same time they share the frame and the soundboard. All the notes come from the same place and the overtones enrich each other, producing a warm, full sound. A gift of fortune was that a few years ago an instrument came up for sale. It was made in 1902 at the Pleyel piano factory, survived the two world wars in Switzerland, and since 1996 has been in our ownership.
