Notes and Editorial Reviews

Performances whose expertise and intelligence can be taken for granted — one could almost imagine a single brain hovering above the two pianos and regulating the Kontarskys' uncanny ensemble.

This set has always been virtually self-recommending, in that it contains the largest selection of Debussy and Ravel's four-hand piano music ever made available, and in performances whose expertise and intelligence can be taken for granted.

Seeing the Kontarskys in concert one could almost imagine a single brain hovering above the two pianos and regulating their uncanny ensemble. Certainly this set, recorded with exemplary clarity, has all the crispness and polish for which they are famous. Yet they are far more than
Read more just a duo-piano precision tool-their Rapsodie espagnole brims over with colour and panache, En blanc et noir, is imaginatively shaped, and the Petite suite shows them quite at home in Debussy's childlike, domestic vein. Perhaps Ma mère l'oye is rather predictable and unevocative, though, and the arrangement of the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune needs more special handling if it is to win many friends.

But comprehensiveness is the record's unassailable asset. We even have the 18-year-old Debussy's Symphony-an eight-and-a-half minute movement to which connoisseurs of the justly neglected have only had access in an obscure Russian edition.
