Barbirolli, like Beecham, had both a lengthy history with Delius and a way with his music. It was not the same way. Beecham preferred to make and record his own editions on occasion of some of the music (Barbirolli even uses one on this release). In general, I think it’s fair to state that he emphasized textural transparency, quick tempos, and shifts of harmony. By contrast, Barbirolli’s recordings of Delius—the Irmelin Prelude providing the best example on this album—preferred the composer’s versions, and are slower, focusing on balance and detail. They’re filled with a sunset romanticism that never seems artificial, applied from the outside. With allowances made for interpretative differences over the years, Beecham’s various recordings of “La Calinda” have a jaunty innocence, while that of Barbirolli relaxes and unfurls its joys slowly.

Not everything is perfect, here. The Hallé Orchestra strings sometimes sound undernourished, and the LSO itself isn’t always in best form. I also find plenty of bite and lyricism in this A London Overture , but not much swagger: Hickox/LSO (Chandos 10110) is better in that respect. But Tintagel is the best on record, in my opinion. With excellent re-mastering of these mid- to late-1960s recordings, generous timings, and decent notes, this is a fine example of Glorious John’s art.
