Notes and Editorial Reviews

Jordi Savall has brought us yet another treasure on his own Alia Vox label, this time a mixed bag of music by Reformation Era composers and a handful of slightly earlier works. It's all taken from a concert program Savall gave last year under the aegis of "greatest hits of the court of Charles V". The composers presented are mostly court musicians for that Holy Roman Emperor, but Josquin and Heinrich Isaac also are included, the latter as a nod to Charles' grandfather, Maximilian I, who was responsible for getting Charles the crown. Savall combines his first-rate instrumental ensemble, updated to Hespèrion XXI, with his own vocal group, La Capella Reial de Catalunya. The results are
Read more captivating. Savall's musicians are tops in the field, and their collective talents, constantly on display in this varied program, are simply a joy to hear.

Savall & Co. have visited this territory many times before, but they have managed to come up with new pieces not duplicated on their many other recordings. Mille Regretz is the name of a Josquin chanson that supposedly was Charles' favorite. Cristobal Morales and others based works on it, and parts of Morales' sublime mass of the same name are given sweet, rich-textured interpretations. A special treat is the vocally stunning Belle qui tiens ma vie by Toinot Arbeau. Sung in a brisk round, the vocalists' rapid-fire delivery and pin-point accuracy is both exhilarating and exhausting. There are also some nice intimate moments, like Luys de Narvaez's solo lute version of Mille Regretz, or the Agnus Dei from Morales' mass.

The entire proceedings are presented in Alia Vox's usual full-bodied, velvety sound, with some of the best reproduction of Renaissance percussion instruments I've heard in some time. Early music lovers should eat this up, and most other enthusiasts of good vocal music will find plenty to adore here as well.
