Poor Reynaldo Hahn, a gifted composer whose talents were overshadowed by his contemporaries Ravel and Satie. Music history has unfairly footnoted him as a somewhat facile, one-dimensional songsmith. True, Hahn did not break new harmonic ground like Ravel, nor did he strike out into the world of Dada like Satie, but he never claimed to be a modernist. His songs are breathlessly melodic and quintessentially elegant, displaying a marvelous gift. It is no surprise that Hahn's teacher was the operatic composer Jules Massenet. The teacher's perfumed lyricism obviously influenced the student, as is evident in many of the songs, but Hahn does have an original voice. He possessed an almost supernatural gift for setting texts, and his songs are the cherished domain of intelligent singers. Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham excels in French repertoire and is an ideal singer to showcase these deliciously lyrical songs. Sensitively accompanied by pianist Roger Vignoles, Graham's dark-hued voice gracefully floats through each song. Her careful phrasing and keen attention to word painting is a joy throughout the program, and she makes the most of the subtle pleasures found in this music. |
