Bernard Haitink has always been a highly competent, well-organized conductor with a fine ear for balance. I’ve found him too cool temperamentally for some of the music he has recorded—Mahler, Vaughan Williams, sometimes Shostakovich—but he managed to produce a very effective Ravel series for Philips in the 1970s. As an interpreter he was typically self-effacing, yet his Ravel readings were hardly drab; thanks to his keen judgment and superb playing from the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the music shimmered and glowed most beautifully.

PentaTone has revived some 1971 quadraphonic recordings from that series, and reissued them as a four-channel surround SACD. (They’re coupled with Boléro in a 1974 version from Edo de Waart and the neighboring Rotterdam Philharmonic; was Haitink’s Boléro not recorded in quad?) Haitink doesn’t do anything arresting or unusual with these scores, but neither is he a deadening influence; the performances breathe and sigh and whoop naturally, while de Waart’s Boléro proceeds with patience and determination. Mother Goose , by the way, is given complete.

At any rate, what we have, especially from Haitink, is beautiful, atmospheric playing, captured with just the right amount of sonic blending—neither dry and clinical, nor diffused and unfocused. A small amount of tape hiss is apparent in quiet passages when you boost the volume. The sonic perspective is rather distant, to take advantage of the hall acoustics, and the woodwind sound is generalized in the distant front-center, but there’s more specificity to the imaging of the rest of the orchestra. Rear-channel ambience envelops you in the Concertgebouw acoustic at climaxes, but is otherwise barely noticeable. If you admired these performances 30 years ago, your opinion will only be reinforced by this SACD.
