"Ivor Bolton drew fresh, immediate playing from the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra in the pit, Johannes Kalitzke brought expressive precision to the Freiburg Experimentalstudio at the back of the stage, and an excellent cast gave performances of equal dramatic and vocal strength. Mojca Erdmann's piercingly sweet Zaide, Topi Lehtipuu's compelling Gomatz, and John Mark Ainsley's persuasive Soliman stood out. Christian Schmidt's nightmarish designs, a third layer of video projection, and Guth's dark staging, richly associative yet crystal clear, made this an intense evening." -- Financial Times, London
