Notes and Editorial Reviews

17-CD SET

The complete works of Frédéric Chopin on 17 discs and an astounding value. Numerous recordings in this set have been licensed from Philips, Decca, Chandos and others including well known recordings by Bella Davidovich, Zoltán Kocsis, Louis Lortie and Evegeny Kissin. The balance of the performances are newly recorded by Brilliant Classics by a number of Dutch pianists.

Of the Dutch players, Gwyn Parry-Jones of MusicWeb-International writes:

"They all have impeccable credentials, and, if they are not familiar to us, certainly deserve to be... some of the recordings use Pleyel pianos from 1842 and 1847 - the kind of which Chopin himself was so very fond –
Read more giving a welcome variety to the interpretations and tone-colour... all of these players are well worth hearing, and there are many outstanding musical experiences to be had here."

Excerpted reviews of the original various licensed recordings are below:

"Bella Davidovich gives excellent accounts of the Impromptus, Opp. 29, 36 and 51, in line with her already familiar interpretations of the Ballades. The simplicity and directness of the A flat major Impromptu is particulary striking, and the whole is beautifully impulsive... Among the Ballades, No. 4 receives a splendidly lucid reading... She treats each one of the Preludes with the greatest care... Her approach is direct and unencumbered by mannerism. These are strong and considered performances" - The Gramophone

"The Canadian pianist, Louis Lortie, was one of the outstanding talents brought to light on this side of the Atlantic at the 1984 Leeds International Competition. That his new recording of Chopin's complete Etudes holds its own alongside other distinguished versions peaks for itself. Technical hurdles are overcome with effortless fluency. But virtuosity is never an end in itself. It's Lortie's intuitive, unselfconscious response to the music's poetry that wins the day." -- The Gramophone

The concerto recordings are the historic debut releases of the 12 year old Evegeny Kissin in Moscow completing this comprehensive set in a most unique way. In all, a highly recommendable compilation and thoroughly complete including the rarely heard songs sung by soprano Anna Haase!
