Notes and Editorial Reviews

"This recording may indeed be the best B minor Mass ever recorded, and that is saying a lot in a field where you can hardly throw a stone without hitting a great one... The period instruments are magnificent, and the 23-member choir sings with a loving tone quality that is impossible to get out of your head when all is over... This is...a reading to live with and by, one that you can turn to with confidence over and over again... The booklet presents a fourteen-part biography of the composer, and rounds out an utterly first class production." -- AUDIOPHILE AUDITION (March 5, 2007) "This recording may indeed be the best B minor Mass ever recorded, and that is saying a lot in a field where you can hardly throw a stone without hitting a great one...  Luxurious Sound for a Period Ensemble November 29, 2011 By Christian Withers (San Antonio, TX) See All My Reviews "This recording has the best of both worlds: the authentic flavor of a period ensemble and the lush, full sound of a modern orchestra. And of course the singing is gorgeous! As with Gardiner's Vespers by Monteverdi, there is an exciting, somehow sensual spirituality throughout. I have an earlier issue of this that also includes Bach's Magnificat and a bonus CD ROM. I would recommend buying that one if you can find it under $50. If not, I'm sure this one sounds just as good, and Herreweghe's Magnificat is doubtless available elsewhere." Report Abuse
