Volume 31 of the Hyperion Schubert Edition is titled SCHUBERT AND RELIGION. Nearly half of the recital is taken up with "Hagers Klage," Schubert's first complete song, and "Mirjams Siegesgesang," a piano-accompanied cantata for soprano, chorus and piano dating from the year of the composer's death. Also included are all three of Schubert's psalm settings. Psalm 13 is for solo voice, No. 23 is for female quartet and chorus and No. 92, uniquely sung in Hebrew, is for unaccompanied chorus with baritone cantor.
None of this material is likely to be familiar. As always with Schubert, there are hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered. "Im Abendrot" and "Himmelsfunken," to pick two, are among Schubert's most beautiful and most rarely

All of the solo songs benefit from the presence of a large voice, amply provided by American soprano Christine Brewer.
