Notes and Editorial Reviews

Kyung Wha Chung; Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Sir Georg Solti. London 411 804-2 [with Bart¢k: Concerto No. 1] (recorded 1983). Reissued on Decca 430 349.

Tenderness, spontaneity, and a certain fragility distinguish Chung’s flowing account of this concerto. Her playing is poetic and expressive, yet true to the music’s intentions and not overly emotive; her tone, intense yet slightly attenuated, has an ideal singing quality. Solti and the Chicago Symphony are spectacular in their partnering of the soloist, and the transparency and depth of tone in the orchestra are quite astounding. London’s engineering gives sensational weight and atmosphere to the sound – this is truly a disc in the demonstration class. – Ted Libbey,
