Benjamin Zander is a man with a mission and that is to enlighten through textual fidelity. As Toscanini once said, "tradition is the last bad performance" and some traditions, such as the weighty and ponderous delivery, complete with dramatic pause, of the opening motto of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony are not indicated and in fact are contrary to what is written in the score. Taking
Read more Beethoven's (fast) metronome markings and performance indications (such as the opening allegro con brio) literally makes the symphony less stately, more urgent and even manic, which is certainly a valid interpretation of the music.
But, composers' real intentions being unknowable and performance indications being the slippery things they are, what matters is that in adding up these details Zander conjures performances that are more than the sum of their parts, quite convincing in their own right, exciting yet logical and, as well-played Beethoven often seems to be, inevitable. That the details emerge so clearly in the context of a rich sound picture is also a credit to Telarc, who achieve in London the kind of results they have gotten so famously in Cleveland and Atlanta.
