Notes and Editorial Reviews

In her recording of Orfeo and elsewhere, conductor Emmanuelle Haïm has proven that her approach to 17th-century vocal music is dramatic, full-blooded, and decidedly full of vibrato, while at the same time remaining faithful to the music itself. Here, she makes her boldest move, using the great, warm-toned young tenor Rolando Villazon and soprano Patrizia Ciofi, known for their roles in 19th-century opera, and Topi Lehtipuu, a fuller-voiced-than-usual tenor, to fill out the trio of singers in Monteverdi. The results are breathtaking, and only the crankiest of purists will complain.

Haïm has wisely chosen some of Moneteverdi's most overtly dramatic music for this experiment
Read more (some of the daintier three-voiced madrigals might not take well to voices of such density), and I cannot recall ever being as bowled over by the 18-minute Combattimento as I was here. This performance vibrates with tension.

As the narrator, Villazon brings Monteverdi's sequence of events absolutely to life. In this tale of war, death, and forgiveness, Monteverdi pulls out all the stops: there are so-called goat trills (a trill on a repeated note, rather than one including the note above or below) that Villazon approaches in an unidiomatic but perfectly acceptable manner, and there are fast runs, periods of almost panic-stricken recitation, and lovely if brief melodies, all handled perfectly by the tenor. Similarly, neither soprano Ciofi as Clorinda nor tenor Lehtipuu as Tancredi has the type of voice we normally associate with Monteverdi, but their commitment, musicality, and dramatic thrust make this reading as urgent and touching as it should be.

The shorter pieces also are remarkable: Ciofi enters into "Ohimé ch'io cado, ohimé", a mock-lament by a person falling in love, with a sigh on the word "Ohimé" that would not be out of place in Donizetti, and she continues in just such an expressive manner. It brings out the irony--and truth--in the song. Villazon and Lehtipuu sing the duet "Interrotte speranze, eternal fede", a lament to a "heartless lady", in perfect unison at first, and when the voices separate, they counterpoint off one-another with passion and near-instrumental purity. In his solos Lehtipuu exhibits agility, a clean-lined Mozartean sound, and, like the others, impeccable musicianship.

This disc, as we used to say in the '60s, is a trip. It goes to show that true musicianship and fidelity to the music (not to mention great singing and playing) are really all that are needed to successfully put across a composer's intentions. The violins in "Tempro la cetra" are alternately sweetly songlike and playful. And as far as the issue of vibrato is concerned, what on earth does a composer mean when he marks something "agitato"? To be sung with a facial tic? I doubt it. I am not negating the superb work of Anthony Rooley and his like when I say that this is a fearless CD, and its rewards are great.
