Beautiful and little-known gemsApril 5, 2012By Peter K. (Fort Collins, CO)See All My Reviews"This recording is one of my favorites, and uncharacteristic in that so much of Loewe is a staple of the bass repertoire and rather heavy. I knew that Loewe wrote some wonderful songs for the female voice from Schwarzkopf recordings of "Irrlichter" and "O Susse Mutter" on an old set of Loewe LPs I had many years ago recorded during WW2, but Fassbender makes a wonderful selection here, including both of those gems and many more. My favorites are the two Faust songs at the outset, with interpretations that are immensely moving despite the relative simplicity of the accompaniment. Loewe is usually dismissed as a musical lightweight, but following the texts reveals much sensitive word painting, as in the haunting "Uber Alle Gipfeln Ist Ruh." If your only exposure to Loewe has been his long dramatic ballads, this recording will come as a delightful surprise. He is a seriously under-appreciated composer, and when he is good, he is very very good!"Report Abuse
