Notes and Editorial Reviews

Note: Opening similarly to the 1610 Vespers, this is a different collection of works based on a volume of Monteverdi’s music, titled Selva morale e spirituale, published in Venice in 1640. It offers an alternative second Vespers setting by Monteverdi.

Unanimously recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Monteverdi, Rinaldo Alessandrini's recordings of the Madrigals, the 1610Vespers, Orfeo, etc., have become standard references. Review Quote:

"There is just the right amount of resonance here, and if, chronologically, the authentic venue would have been St Mark’s itself, the fact that Monteverdi worked in Mantua immediately before his Venice job makes it scarcely any less appropriate. Apart from the plainsong Latin antiphons, all the vocal music – motets, psalm-settings and the concluding Magnificat – are by Monteverdi, and they make a magnificent sound....The glory of the eight-voice Magnificat caps it all, with Alessandrini finding both expressive breadth and immediacy through pungent instrumental playing and a mix of solo and ensemble voices that is absolutely first-rate, matching the spectacular with the poetic. The behind-the-scenes DVD offers some useful background as an adjunct to a superlative CD." - Geoffrey Norris, The Telegraph Read less
