Notes and Editorial Reviews

The work of Louis-Noël Belaubre ranks amongst the most important in the second half of the 20th century, so it more than surprising to note the total absence of his works in the contemporary discography. What a pleasant prospect, then, is the projected recording for release on CD of Le tombeau de Louisa Paulin for contralto, cello and piano, the Romances du gai savoir for flute, clarinet and piano and the Ode pour Jean de La Fontaine for soloists, mixed choir and piano. These three major works alone would be sufficient to define this composer's musical esthetic's and his organic development, as well as the exceptional role and stature he assumes in the music of our epoch. And for anyone who expresses surprise at not seeing his prolific Read more output of works for piano (which, incidentally, earned him the French Foundation Award) represented amongst the solo pieces, one has only to point out the importance of the piano in part in the Ode pour Jean de La Fontaine - it can be compared to an instrument solo in a concerto. This particularly representative choice should help to develop an active curiosity about all the different aspects of this independent composer's work, whose sound holds a real fascination for the listener and which 'like the work of Henri Dutilleux or Benjamin Britten, offers an individual response to the aesthetic problems of the last part of the 20th century'. - Marc Honneger Saint Martin de Vers Read less
